Halley's Comet in 1986.
Fitzroy made the VFL preliminary final. It was the club’s last finals appearance before extinction 10 years later.
Halley’s Comet flew past the earth that year. I was a member of Traralgon Young Farmers, and we made a club trip to Mt St Gwinear for the occasion. We camped out and drank beer. I have no recollection that any of us saw the comet!
I was 19 years old in 1986 and worked casual jobs before I embarked on my journalism career in 1987.
I was a "trades assistant" on a construction site, and among other things I also worked in a tenpin bowling alley.
I was the youngest ever state president of the Young Nationals that year and travelled much of Victoria, including my first visit to Myrtleford and Porepunkah.

In ’86 I was 26. I worked for Hands Across America through the summer and shot of too Massachusetts after it was over. I was there 18 months and remember feeling very independant.
