Sight Unseen by Robert Goddard

4 starsSight Unseen is another thrilling mystery by the largely unheralded English author Robert Goddard.

I’ve read all his books and this latest is one of the best.

It blends 18th century politics and history with the recent past and modern era to produce an explosive cocktail of spice and tension.

It’s the story of uninspiring university history student, David Umber, who witnesses an abduction and hit-run inident that changes his life forever.

Umber marries one of the survivors, then divorces her and struggles to cope after her supposed suicide.

Later events suggest that she may have been murdered and he joins a retired police detective in trying to piece together the jigsaw.

It’s a journey that takes them across England and to Jersey, involving personal crises, brushes with organised crime and more.

I had trouble putting this book down and finished it in two days.

The writing is fluid and, unlike some Goddard mysteries, the plot is highly believable. He has a tendency in some other books to stretch the believability of coincidences, but I had no such trouble with Sight Unseen.

Well written as always, I strongly recommend this book to anyone who likes a thought-provoking mystery without too much violence.
