ADSL now connected

July 5th, 2005 | 1 Comment

Our ADSL connection was finally made today. After studying prices and reviews on Whirlpool I decided to go with Curl Communications.

Some of their reviews weren’t very flattering, but they were from people who do gaming and file sharing, neither of which applies to me.

The deal with Curl is $40 per month for 25GB download at 512kbps and no extra charge in the unlikely event I exceed the download limit. There’s no contract and I can churn at any time.

My experience so far is very positive. I had trouble connecting with Windows XP and made two service calls. I got through straight away each time and we figured out that my ethernet driver wasn’t installed. I must have lost it when making a new XP installation.

I switched to Linux (Fedora 4), made another call and 30 seconds later I was flying. The speed so far is terrific.

I don’t know what to do about XP though. I thought it was meant to automatically detect hardware. I’m happy to do all my browsing in Fedora, but some of my web design and FTP work is better suited to Windows.

Update: From Fedora’s hardware detection I obtained the name of my ethernet controller (Marvell Yukon), visited their web site, downloaded and installed the driver. It now works in Windows XP.

Just found your blog and I’m enjoying it. Saw the picture of the kids in the snow and did a double take — Living in Miami, Florida, I forget what month it is, or what season. I have to stop and think about it. July — that’s our summer of course (although here in Miami, it’s always summer :). Had to really do a double take to remember where you were!
