Cloudstreet comments
My blog comments have been dominated by opinions on Tim Winton’s Cloudstreet. I’m in two minds whether to close comments on this subject or go with the flow.
I’m currently leaning towards the latter. I find most of the posts interesting and entertaining. I’ve had to edit a few for language, but most are clever and witty.
Cloudstreet, I now know, is a Year 12 text and there must be hundreds of students searching the web for references. I think most of the comments are from students and teachers.

I came to Cloudstreet via Breath - sort of back to front as it were. The reason I sought more after Breath was that I didn’t understand what was behind it. Perhaps nothing. I’ve been in Oz now 45 yrs (and am now 73). I am a migrant whoes youth was that of war time England, so anything about Australian families of the same era has interested me. My Brother Jack I took to be the typical family life; a story I much admire.
Cloudstreet is confusing as the style of living and existance seemed contrived to me. Certainly not as easy to read as Breath. As to the way the two families combine is nothing out of the ordinary, most people under stress lean to one another.
As to the author, his writing is fluid and readable but not so easy to understand.
