Tiddly Wiki
Just when I thought the internet wouldn’t surprise me any more, I discovered Tiddly Wiki. I’m a gadget man and can’t be accused of living under a rock for the past year, but how this one escaped me escapes me.
Tiddly Wiki is “a reusable non-linear personal web notebook”. It’s an HTML file with java script that can be almost anything you want it to be.
The most obvious purpose is as a personal note taker. It can save information online if you upload it to a server, or offline on your computer.
I’ve been researching wikis for the past week or so, trying to determine if one might be useful in my workplace. Wikis are collaborative web sites where anyone can edit and create pages in a browser. I think they need a WYSIWYG interface to be practical for non-technical people.
Anyhow, while testing various open source versions I wondered if a wiki could be put to personal use. I Googled for “personal wiki” and found Tiddly Wiki.
There are various offshoots from the main creation, offering different styles and features. I’ve employed one that requires login to create tiddlers, as the notes are called.
This tool has a benefit for me because I split my work between office and home. For other people it might be just a toy. Potentially it can be used as a blog, writing documentation or almost anything else.
I’d like to see some plugins developed for things like calendars and image uploads.
I’m curious this innovation hasn’t taken off more already. Watch this space. Here’s my personal tiddly wiki.
