Windows password and Mandriva
Dude forgot his Windows password! The kids have passwords because they are paranoid their siblings might read their personal files. The older ones are just nine and 11, yet they have computer passwords! I didn’t touch a computer until I was 22.
Anyway, what to do about Dude’s PC? There are a few tricks involving live Linux CDs that I might have tried, and did, but because his computer was a dual boot with Suse I couldn’t get the boot loader to behave as it should.
There might have been a solution, but I couldn’t be bothered.
So I reinstalled Windows and then added the new community version of Mandriva. I gave Dude my second office computer in a direct swap. It has a better video card, which suits his games. It has XP and Fedora 4.
Mandriva is pretty good. The look and feel is excellent. On the downside, it surprised me that Firefox 1.07 wasn’t available as a package, so I installed it from source, likewise with OpenOffice 2. The average newbie wouldn’t have a clue about that.
All up though I’m pretty pleased. I’ll keep using this as my main computer for a while and maintain core data files on both as backup.
I just told Dude that I’m writing this entry. He said the password is necessary to protect his computer from the babies, as well as Kathleen. "They’re cute but dangerous," he said.
