Memories of 1986

November 4th, 2005 | 1 Comment | Posted in Personal

ABC Radio in Melbourne is inviting listeners tonight to describe their memories of 1986. That’s a long time ago! Two things stand out for me.

Fitzroy made the VFL preliminary final. It was the club’s last finals appearance before extinction 10 years later.

Halley’s Comet flew past the earth that year. I was a member of Traralgon Young Farmers, and we made a club trip to Mt St Gwinear for the occasion. We camped out and drank beer. I have no recollection that any of us saw the comet!

I was 19 years old in 1986 and worked casual jobs before I embarked on my journalism career in 1987. I was a "trades assistant" on a construction site, amongst other things.

I was the youngest ever state president of the Young Nationals that year and travelled much of Victoria, including my first visit to Myrtleford and Porepunkah.

In ‘86 I was 26. I worked for Hands Across America through the summer and shot of too Massachusetts after it was over. I was there 18 months and remember feeling very independant.
