The flies have it
The flies are worse than usual this year. I don’t know what it is, perhaps the tropical weather, but the irritating winged devils are out in force. They even rated a mention on the Melbourne TV news recently, so the poor city folk are suffering as well.
Friends went on a bike ride two weeks ago and reckoned they swallowed dozens of the little buggers while climbing a hill in the bush. “They’re not good without sauce,” one commented.
The mind boggled when I considered the cow pats the flies must have been feasting on previously.
Juliet and I went to Wangaratta today for her citizenship interview and Christmas shopping. We bought Thai takeway for lunch and went to the park for eating, and to let the twins play.
The flies were monstrous. It was impossible to eat with two utensils, as one hand was constantly required to wave them away.
Juliet spilled some pumpkin curry sauce on the wooden table, and within seconds, five sucker flies drowned.
It made me glad my walk in the Warbys last week was in cool weather. Likewise, the flies are mostly absent on my morning runs if I go before the temperature climbs above 12 degrees.
We’re lucky here in the North East to have cool mornings in summer; wintry by coastal standards.
As for the citizenship interview, it’s just a formality now before Juliet becomes a dual springbok/wallaby.
