Kalgoorlie Miner web site

People often ask me when will the Kalgoorlie Miner have a web site? Well it won’t be long.

The site is currently under development and should be launched by the end of the year.

The core site will publish news, general information and classifieds. We have some exciting plans to add community content on a linked site.

Update (February 20, 2007): The web site obviously hasn’t been launched yet. I currently don’t have a timeframe, except to say that development is a priority.

Update (July 14, 2007): Goldfields news should be online “soon” through www.thewest.com.au.

Update (August 28, 2007): The site is still under development, but it’s now live at http//www.kalminer.com.au.

When will the Miner be online…..if small regional towns like Port Lincoln can get their paper online……why can’t Kalgoorlie?

Let me know when it is up and running!!!

    Cheers

Melinda, if it was up to me the web site would be up and running tomorrow. It could have been up and running 12 months ago.

The Kalgoorlie Miner is part of WA Newspapers and the pace of implementation is a company decision.

Although it frustrates me, I understand the strategic benefit in having an integrated strategic approach across the group.

The last word I had from head office was it should be up and running by the end of June. Watch this space!

Hi, I was just wondering what it is like to live in Kalgoorlie. Thinking of moving there from NSW. Have 2 kids – 4 and 9. Is it a good place to bring up children. How is the infrastructure? Look forward to your comments.

Michael’s note: I’ve answered the question here.

  12. Michael says:

The latest outlook is for the Miner site to be live by the end of July 2007. I'll say more when I have something definite.

  13. Isobel says:

I was wondering why the Kal Miner isn,t online yet. I live in the Solomon Islands and really miss reading the local news. Even The newspaper in this third world country is online.

  14. Yvette says:

Anymore news on when the thing will be up and running?

  15. Michael says:

Yvette, I've said all along that I could get a site up an running within days if management gave me the all-clear. Last week I put a new proposal to the company to do just that.

It seems the launch of our presence within http://www.thewest.com.au is imminent, and it was suggested I should wait to see how it looks.

I am concerned the Kalgoorlie Miner's identity will be submerged or secondary to The West Australian under that scenario, but maybe I'm being premature.

      Hi Michael
My name is Rob Hocking and my father ran the Kalgoorlie Miner for West Australian Newspapers in the 1970’s and my grand father was one of the three sons who inherited a share of the paper from their father my great grand father. My father now suffers dementia but his sister of City Beach Perth WA has been researching family history for some time. I believe there may be family links to SA and Mt Gambier

I recall spending a lot of time at the papers premises and an in the rear warehouse of old fashion business in the main street called Sheads and it does bring back fantastic memories.

      Regards

Hi Rob, the Hocking family is famous for establishing the Kalgoorlie Miner, of course. The Miner office is a beautiful building and I hope it always stays there. I have a picture of it on my wall in Mount Gambier.

Good work Michael! Keep on pushing management.  Technically it is very easy to do, since the whole paper is already put together electronically.  All we need is gateway to the net. Having some minor Monthly charge for viewing is not a problem for audience in Goldfields and it would be nice to have some source of local news when out of town.

Hi Rob, I was a close friend of Sally Hocking in the 1940’s & 50’s, I am guessing she would be your aunt, as she had a brother Jack & lived in egan street. I am hoping you could give me a contact for her. Thank you Georgina Cain Sydney
