Unusual summer weather

January 3rd, 2007 | No Comments | Posted in Kalgoorlie

I’ve been resigned to expecting and experiencing hot weather in Kalgoorlie during summer, which is basically the period from late October until early April.

Satellite mapQuite amazingly therefore, we had a maximum temperature of just 18 degrees today on January 3. That’s if you don’t count the fact it was 25 degrees at midnight. Rain started falling about 6am and hasn’t stopped all day.

It’s been a slow, steady rain; the type that’s great for the garden. It’s very unusual for Kalgoorlie at this time of year, or any time of year for that matter.

Apparently a rare cold front has pushed its way up from the south and intercepted the remnants of Cyclone Isobel meandering down from the north. The Weather Bureau was forecasting strong winds, which so far haven’t materialised, and heavy rain, which is likely if the current conditions continue. Up until 4pm though only 12mm had fallen. It’s now 6pm and it’s still raining.

PS: We finished up with 45mm of rain from the system and had four pleasantly cool days.
