Ashes tribute

January 5th, 2007 | No Comments

Congratulations to the Australian cricket team on its 5-0 Ashes whitewash, the first such success in 90 years since Warwick Armstrong’s day. The Poms were totally outclassed and never threatened.

I thought that was a shame for the game of cricket because I at least expected them to be competitive. I won’t say much about the retirement of Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Justin Langer, because I think the first two are overrated in historical terms.

Maybe I’ll come back to that as a separate topic. Langer though commands my respect. He was a pugnacious batsman who overcame his deficiencies to be a world-class performer. I’ll miss him from the Australian team.
