World Cup #2

April 5th, 2007 | 1 Comment

The World Cup has really struggled for excitement so far. The tournament has dragged out interminably and there have been few close games.

The weather hasn’t helped and the crowds attending have been poor. Cricket can’t afford its showcase event being a flop, but unless there are sell-out crowds for the semi-finals and final, that’s the way it’s heading.

If a lot of Indians and Pakistanis bought tickets for those games there might be empty seats at the finals.

That said, I’m enthused by the performance of Sri Lanka. Along with New Zealand, I believe they pose the biggest threat to Australia winning again.

Are there too many teams? Probably. I enjoyed the first round more than the Super Eights, but perhaps there should be 12 sides instead of 16.

I’m disappointed there is no game today (Thursday) or tomorrow (Good Friday). There may be religious reasons for that, but cricket is a global sport and many World Cup participants are non-Christian. A Super Eight match on Good Friday would have had a huge worldwide television audience.

Re your poll on who might win the world cup Michael, you might have to add Bangladesh after they convincingly knocked off the Proteas.

I’m surprised they can afford a cricket team let alone mix it with the best, which they seem to be doing.
