Editing comments

April 14th, 2007 | No Comments

It’s poor form that most web sites allow you to make comments but not to modify them. That can be annoying and sometimes embarrassing.

Have you ever pressed the submit button only to realise you made a silly spelling mistake? Or worse, did you get fired up about something and thunder away, regretting the angry tone immediately afterwards?

I learnt long ago to avoid the latter, but there have been occasions when I’ve written something which I thought later could be misinterpreted and could have been expressed differently.

People who write posts can edit them, but most content management systems and blogs don’t allow casual visitors to change their own comments.

WordPress has a great plugin called WP Ajax Edit Comments which remedies this:

WP Ajax Edit Comments (for WP 2.1+) allows users and admins alike to edit comments on a post. Users can edit their own comments for a period specified by the admin, and admins can edit all post comments. What better way to show reader appreciation than letting the readers edit their own typos?

I’ve set the edit time to 60 minutes.
