Myrtleford Saints 2007

April 15th, 2007 | 3 Comments

I’ve been following the Myrtleford Saints from afar in Western Australia as best I can. Having been involved with the club at various levels over a number of years it’s hard to let go.

I’ve got no idea what’s going on behind the scenes and I have nothing to comment on except the scores.

The Saints had a good win against Wodonga Raiders in the opening round, only to be thumped in the next two games.

What disturbs me the most is the score from the reserves in round three: Myrtleford 0.0.0 v Yarrawonga 28.19.187. I’ve known the club to lack depth before, but that result is shocking.

I remember Bernie Quinlan’s first game as coach of Fitzroy. I was there at the Western Oval against Essendon in the opening round of the season. At half time, Fitzroy hadn’t troubled the scorers. Bernie referred to his embarrassment at the “duck eggs” in his post-match interview.

I can’t recall a senior team ever having duck eggs at full time.

A few Myrtleford players moved over (or back) to Bright this year in the O & K league. That might explain Myrtleford’s poor start after being runners up for the past two years. It seems to be an annual event, players swapping between Bright & Myrtleford.

The Myrtleford reserves result (0.0.0) resembles a lot of Bright’s 1sts and 2nds results last year (and the one before). Maybe we sent them our rejects!

Just a follow up on this Michael. You might be interested to hear that so far this year Bright hasn’t managed to field a seconds footy side and the thirds have been abandoned. That all comes after the council spent nearly half a million last year upgrading the club’s facilities, while spending zilch on the CBD/tourist facilities. Daryl the Mayor still does the goal umpiring. Sorry to bring up local news from your old stomping ground but it just shows you how right you were to move west!

I’m sorry to hear the club is struggling for numbers. A football club is an important part of a town’s social fabric.

We still miss that area very much. The sporting opportunities for kids though are limited in Bright and that’s a turn-off for young families.

I was just saying to my 11-year-old son this morning, on the way to his advanced soccer coaching registration, how he couldn’t have done that in Porepunkah.
