Boss of the angels

November 10th, 2004 | No Comments

Dude is preapring for his First Communion and Confirmation this weekend. He had to choose a confirmation name, which is generally a saint’s name.

I have a book of saints and Dude wanted to know who’s feast day was on his birthday. That honor he shares with St Enda, an early Christian who founded monasteries in Ireland. So Enda is Dude’s confirmation name, an unusual choice to be sure.

Anticipating he may be asked about Enda by the Bishop or priest, I helped Dude memorise enough information to sufficiently impress.

We got to talking about saints, and his favorite it seems is Michael, who little Michael knows to be “the boss of the angels”.

He then asked me: “Who is the boss of the fairies?”

That’s a very good question, as only a child can ask. I can’t say that I came up with an adequate answer, mumbling something about fairies not being the same as angels and not having a boss.

I thought afterwards that I could have answered “Senator Bob Brown” but the double-edged irony would have been lost on an eight year old.
