Winter rain in Kalgoorlie

June 4th, 2007 | No Comments

Kalgoorlie had 20mm of rain last night and some more during the day. The temperature rose to just 10 degrees. The average maximum in June is 17.5 degrees and the monthly rainfall is normally 29mm.

It was a steady soaking rain on the sort of wintry day I was more used to experiencing in North East Victoria.

Kalgoorlie wasn’t designed to cope with rain, understandably considering the yearly average is only 266mm. When it does rain the drains struggle to cope, the roads are awash and there is localised flooding.

The good thing about today’s downpour was that water is now flowing into the Piccadilly Dam. That’s a 200 megalitre storage, completed recently to hold water for irrigating the new grass golf course which is under development.

The dam was supposed to be finished over a year ago and everyone thought there was no hope of filling it after missing the summer thunderstorms.

When we checked today though there was 1.5 metres of water in the dam at lunchtime.
