I’m currently experimenting with Facebook. My personal space is here.
I’ve resisted social networks so far, thinking them the domain of young single people. I read somewhere though, that Facebook has created a niche among professional people, and many of the new members are aged over 40.
That’s me, a web-savvy 40-year-old!
I’m still undecided about the benefits. Why not just use your own blog to communicate and interact?
The possibility to network with a professional group is probably the best advantage for someone like me. Unfortunately, most of the people I worked with in the 80s and 90s don’t seem to be members.

That, and Myspace users are bandwith-stealing leaches.
Interesting that you say that Facebook is better for professionals. LinkedIn was designed specifically for professionals, but it might not be what you're looking for. Facebook is definitely more popular and is more personable, but it sounded like LinkedIn is more of what you wanted.
Thanks Al. I checked out LinkedIn and can see the merit of it for professional networking. I set up a personal profile.
Unfortunately it doesn't yet seem to have the volume of Australian participants that Facebook has.
