It’s been a long time coming, but I am pleased to give readers here advance notice that news from the Kalgoorlie Miner is now being published online.
The web address is www.kalminer.com.au.
The site is still under development and is still being populated with content. An official announcement will be made soon. A number of improvements will follow in the months ahead.

My Great grandmother’s sister was named Beatrice O’Loughlin Born in Ireland…co Clare, she married Charles Traboldt Born in new York, they lived in Kalgoorlie and ran hotel/s in Perth. Beatrices’ brothrs John and James O’loughlin workd in the hotels for a while.Has anyone heard of these fok as I am doing family history. thanks so much Lynette

My father, Jack Kyle Hocking ran the Kalgoorlie Miner for some years in the 1970’s and my grand father Sidney Jack Fenn Hocking was a part owner / managing editor until the brother sold the business in the 70’s. I recall as a kid visiting the offices and a Mrs O’loughlin manning the reception and switch board.. (Freds wife)
My father played cricket and football in the 1950’s with Fred and Vin (Vincent) O’Loughlin. Fred retired to Esperance after running a printing business in Kalgoorlie for many years. Vin never married to my knowledge and was a member of the ADF in either Korea or Vietnam. Both were avid duck hunters and i recall shooting expeditions in the 70’s as well.
Fred has children/grand children still living in Kalgoorlie. I am not sure if Fred or his wife are still alive.
My father Jack Kyle is in aged care in Esperance but unfortunately suffers dementia.
Not sure how you would contact the O’loughlins in Kalgoorlie other than pot luck with a phone call. I have a team photo which includes Fred and my father from the 50’s, but will need an email address if you would like a scanned copy.

My Great grandfathers brother Alexander gunn lived in and around Kalgoorlie & leonora.He was buried in kalgoorlie ? date, it was in the miner ? when. Is there any way I can access old records from the paper. It would’ve been at the turn of the last century.

Our family had ownership interests in the paper from this period and after it was sold by my grand father and his brothers my father managed it in the 1970’s for West Australian Newspapers”. I remember that there were back copies of very old editions of he Kalgoorlie Miner and the Western Argus” and I think they went to Perth to the “West Australian Newspaper” archives when the business was “shut down”.
I would think you could get this detail from the births deaths and marriages registers for a small fee. You may struggle to get someone to look through old newspapers.

Rob, the historical bound volumes stayed in Kalgoorlie, but they were very fragile and we stopped public access. Most of the early editions are available on microfilm at the Battye Library in Perth, and I believe with the historical society in Kalgoorlie.
Lyn, whether you check the microfilm or BDM records you’ll need a full name and an approximate date. Some of the BDM records can be checked online.

I couldnt see an email address so hope this somehow gets to you. Ken is living in Esperance. He married Dianne, had two girls and tragically lost her to cancer a few years ago. He has subsequently remarried and lives near Pink Lake on Pink Lake Rd. He enjoys a hit of golf at Pink Lake and is involved with the club. He is pretty quiet.
I guess you could say he has been semi – retired for quite a while

Dear friends
My name is Bohdan Hnatyk.
I live in Ukraine.
I am writing to ask you about a very great favour. I ask you to print my ads in your newspaper “Kalgoorlie Miner”. This announcement of the search information about my uncle Piotr Bozyk.
I and my mother Katerine Hnatyk(Bozyk)-his sister were looking for him during the long years. And now at last we were informed through Red Cross that he lived in Kalgoorlie.Western Australia.
I want to lescribe you the situation with Piotr Bozyk.
He was born in village Novosilki or near Yavoriv. Lviv, Poland (pre-WWII) in what is today Western Ukraine. He was born on may 1912.
Since 1942 the german fashists have compulsory moved out to forced labour into Germany. In 1945 we have got a letter that he is living and when he will go out so he will write to us obligator. But conditions were changed: our Ukraine must be found under the communist power in the Soviet borders were closed at so called “iron curtain” from the Western Countries.
In 1991 our Ukraine became an independent state and we decided to write a letter to the International Tracing Service and at last we got an answer that Piotr Bozyk lived in the town Kalgoorlie and died on the 7th june and was buried on 9th of june 1989 on the local cemetery in
the city Kalgoorlie. (Unfortunately he died). Piotr Bozyk (Requiem mass 9 June 1989 at St Mary’s Catholic Church. Kalgoorlie). Saint Mary’s Church, Kalgoorlie, Western Australia A requiem mass was held on the 9 June 1989 at St Mary’s Catholic Church prior to his interment in the Roman Catholic Section of Kalgoorlie Cemetery – Crave 16039.
From the Red Cross information we knew that he during the period from 1945 till 1989 was alive. Unfortunately we could not meet with him after long years of separation. But we didn’t know in how he lived in those years, was he married or no, has he children or no. We didn’t know nothing about him and his life and didn’t get letters. Nowadays we know nothing about him.
It is impossible that he lived a lot of years in exile in Kalgoorlie and hadn’t no communication with somebody. He worked and had friends, that they knew him in Kalgoorlie. This information is important to our family. Last time we saw him in 1942. Unfortunately he died.
We decided to put ads in the newspaper “Kalgoorlie Miner”. Please print my announcement and a picture of my uncle in your newspaper. Maybe more people live and their friends and give us information.
Your ads are paid. Write me how much my ads with a photo in your newspaper. How can I pay for ads (Visa Card). Print my ad in Monday and Saturday. How much does it cost.
When it possible for you, please help me in these relations.

Families from Ukraine looking for information about uncle Piotr Bozyk. Could you help me, to provide information about the life my uncle in Kalgoorlie. From the Red Cross information in 1949-Post-war immigration to Australia. On board ship Anna Salen arrived in Fremantle on 23 August 1949. 1950-1989- he lived in Kalgoorlie. Brookman St 125. During all of his working life in Kalgoorlie Piotr Bozyk worked as fettler (a member of a gang who repair railway lines). 1989- he died in Kalgoorlie. Buried in the Kalgoorlie cemetery. Friend and acquaintances to contact us.

I would suggest you look for help from the Polish Society first and perhaps births deaths and marriages register. I think the death certificate will also list the maiden name of any marriage and also lists the name of children. A link to that site is attached

Re- the appalling vandalisation of the lord forrest swimming pool. My family lived there in the 1960’s and recently went back to find it abandoned and vandalised. why has this been allowed to happen?
Generations of people grew up and spent their lives swimming there. Its an historical building.

I am not sure you have the correct thread or site for your comment. I had a small response to a story I noticed on the Gorey.com.au site. I think you should be looking to the kalminer.com.au site to make your comment.
Interestingly I spent a lot of time at the pool in the 70’s. I recall as an 11 y/o, riding a bike to the police station in Brookman St, leaving it there and walking across melting bitumen to the corner of MacDonald And Cassidy Sts and finally doing a bombie of the 10′ springboard to cool off. I think a Mr Donaldson was running it at that stage. I used to dive to the bottom of the deep end on a busy day and always collected coins that had fallen from peoples pockets. We had season tickets and always got home completely water logged. I see they now have a new complex with a heated pool and other facilities. The Pool is heriatge listed but I guess stuff gets old and does need to be replaced. I would think it would be a fairly dangerous place and perhaps the original should be kept in reasonable condition and the rest made safe..

Appreciate your view Mr Hocking, but the lord forrest was one of the first original olympic sized pools outside of sydney and I often heard people in kal complain about having to go all the way out toward boulder in order to have a swim. One would think two pools would cater for kals growing population. Afterall they dont confine the perth metroplitan area to just one giant sized pool now do they?
Anyway I know there’s nothing much you can do about it but generations of history means nothing to modern day australians unfortunately. Just think its sad, thats all.
It was always such a beautiful pool. Could be done up and made new with its original art deco design. Shame.

I have not been back to Kal in over 15 years since shifting to Brisbane.
The pool is heritage listed so I assume some of the buildings will be kept for posterity. As for the pool itself I would imagine that much of the concrete and supporting infrastructure was and is well beyond its lifetime of structural integrity..I clearly recall the magnificent tiling particularly around the perimeter which allowed you to hang on. Irreplaceable I would think..
My father was raised in Egan St, Kal and my mother in Piesse St Boulder. I suspect a lot of Boulder people thought if their was to be just one pool it was their turn to be closer in the 21st century. I suppose it just depends on where you live!! Cant comment on the second pool but the community through council could probably resolve that one…
Perhaps the saddest thing in my mind is that I could not now allow my kids to do what I did and ride into town and go to the pool by themsleves. If anything happened to them I would be branded as at best irresponsible and maybe even criminally negligent. Sadly times have certainly changed. We rode our push bikes to school, to sport, for fun and I cant recall my father driving us anywhere except to Boulder for footy.
Unfortunately I think the litigious nature of society, loss of “old fashioned” skills and exhorbitant costs to maintain our historical buildings drives this loss….

Thank you Rob & Peter, I would appreciate any information on Beatrice O’Loughlin and Charles Traboldt who ran a hotel in Perth with James O’loughlin and also in Kalgoorlie. Charles I saw applied for reg. at an alien and so did Beatrice, she was born in Ireland and he was born in New York to German parents. I know they both are burried in Coolgardie district in Kalgoorlie. How would I find if they had any children? I applied and paid the WA magistrates court for a will they said there was none for Beatrice & as far as I am aware there is none for Charles. Would I be able to find a monument incription on their headstones? Charles died in 1924 and Beatrice in 1942. The City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder has access to old copies of the Kalgoorlie Miner from 1895 – 2000 on micro film. If anyone would like info you can email me timothy.moore@kalbould.wa.gov.au with appoximate dates I will try and track down info.
Looking for details of Ernest Edward Fletcher who died of what they called “miners titus” on or about 1920 in Boulder City
What is “miners titus”? Is it tinnitis? a ringing, buzzing and roaring sound in the ears.
Not considered to be fatal unless the sufferer is driven to suicide.
Miners titus is a disease of the lungs, I think they call it asbestosis now, got it from going down mines.
Hi, my name is Steve and I visited my good friend Peter Harding in Kal in 1987. Peter was a lecturer at one of the colleges. He was married to Mandy and had a little dog he called Metric. I believe he later had children. He lived in De Bernales Street
I have searched constantly for Peter and found out he won the Corgi Cup in 97, he was keen pilot and microlights were his passion.
Sadly I received an e-mail on Friday informing me of his untimely death as a result of a microlight accident somewhere in WA. He was approx 50 years old. The accident occured in Oct 2009.
