Watching TV

I don’t watch television any more. It wasn’t a conscious decision; I just don’t want to. Occasionally I watch some sport, but even that is rare these days.

My limited spare time is spent on the web or reading books.

Not viewing TV kills quite a few conversations. Someone will ask me if I saw such and such. I reply that I don’t watch TV and they just say, “Oh” or “you really should watch this” and that’s the end of discussion.

Maybe I should pretend that I watch television? It shouldn’t be too hard to make up a fictional opinion on TV fiction.

I watch very little 'free to air' TV these days but some of the shows on Austar/Foxtel ARE really worth seeing. My current favourite is Man vs Wild on Discovery Channel. It features a British 'adventurer' Bear Grylls (yes, that's his name!) who parachutes in to remote, dangerous places (like Iceland!) and then fights the elements to find his way out. This guy is really an amazing survival freak - and he's genuine. He's sort of a cross between Steve Irwin, Indiana Jones and the Leyland Brothers. It's great stuff.

I record a lot of things –  Spin City, News Radio (both old shows), Eureka, Stargate, My Boys, and some of the better comedies … oh, and Graham Norton — and watch them in marathon sessions while I'm doing laundry, blogging or reading magazines.

It's rare that I'll sit and watch a show when it's broadcast.

I have the TV on, more or less, as background noise.  If I read with the radio on I sing along (poorly). I don't have that problem with the TV in the background.
