State award for Kalgoorlie journalist

November 10th, 2007 | No Comments

I’m pleased to publish the first report of a Kalgoorlie Miner journalist winning a state media award tonight:

A Kalgoorlie Miner journalist won a prestigious prize at the 2007 WA Media Awards. Phillipa Prior won the award for the three best news stories or features published in a country newspaper. The awards recognise outstanding media work from September 2006 to August 2007.

WA Journalists Association president David Cohen said Miss Prior’s win was testament to her skill and talent.

The awards were presented at Burswood Entertainment Complex on Saturday in front of 350 people.

“Prior showed great range in her reporting skills, from consumer affairs to police rounds to a feature on the 40th anniversary of the 1967 referendum on Aboriginal rights,” the judges said.

Prior was the fourth Kalgoorlie Miner winner of the country prize since it was introduced in 1996. Past winners were Jay Townsend (1996), Liam Phillips (2002) and Kym Daly (2006).

I congratulate Phillipa on her success.

The Kalgoorlie Miner has had a good run with awards and honors this year. Phillipa was also highly commended in the OPSA media awards and along with Georgia Loney was selected for a Minerals Council of Australia journalists fellowship (two of six from across Australia).

Ron Berryman won the AMEC journalist of the year and Alicia Bridges won a WA country award for youth affairs reporting.

The Kalgoorlie Miner was highly commended in the international PANPA awards for “community events” regarding our coverage of the Varischetti rescue centenary.
