I saw my second snake of the season this week. The first was a small brown snake, observed while cycling on the rail trail near the entrance to Porepunkah about a fortnight ago. On Wednesday I encountered a medium-size red-bellied black snake stretched out across the track through the pines near Quins Gap.
Black snakes are generally more placid than brown, so I neatly sidestepped him while keeping watch. The snake didn’t move at all.
A colleague mentioned today that she saw a massive brown snake while cycling near Whorouly. The snake apparently lifted its head as though to strike and came quite close to doing so.
