Western Australia is a BIG state, bigger than Texas, and that’s a fact. If you travel 300km from Melbourne you will either be across the state border or closer to one than you are to the capital in most cases.
Drive 300km in WA and you’ve hardly gone anywhere.
We travelled more than 1200km today getting from Kalgoorlie to Mandurah. The journey would normally have been 800km, but the Great Eastern Highway remains closed six days after a bushfire first struck the road.
We could have taken a shorter detour if we’d been prepared to risk 200km on a gravel road, but I wasn’t prepared to take that risk. Instead we travelled via Esperance, Ravensthorpe and Lake Grace.
The kids handled the journey surprisingly well. The holiday home is just as we remembered it. Our fun starts tomorrow.
