I wrote briefly before about Yakedi! It’s a free web-based service for sending text messages to Australian mobile phones.
I’m so impressed with Yakedi! that this post is simply a blatant plug to say thanks and well done.
I read somewhere the modern human has evolved to be more dextrous with his thumb than his pointer finger, thanks to the phenomenon of text messaging.
Not me, I was a latecomer to the whole concept and can’t say I particularly like it. I receive a lot more text messages than I send.
When I do go to send one, I hate fiddling around with the tiny keyboard on my JasJam.
I tried mBox online for a while and later Skype, but both require payment for sending SMS.
I searched for a uniquely Australian service and found Yakedi!
Not only is it free, it also enables users to set up contact lists and keeps a log of all messages sent.
The proponents say: “No catch, no spam, no limits and no annoying (and expensive) premium sms sent to your phone. In fact, we will never send you any sms messages, nor will we ever allow anyone on our network do so. This service is completely free for all users, and your details are kept private and confidential.”
Apparently they make money from the ads they serve up on the site. They’re moderately annoying, but the interface is so clean I find them less obtrusive than a couple of other services I tried.
I hope they make enough money to continue providing this wonderful service.
Meanwhile, people who know me are starting to discover that I’m sending a lot more text messages than I used to.

Nope, can’t. Oh well. I’ll just do it the expensive way.
Keep an eye on it Sue. I think they plan to go international, which would be great. I’ll let you know if that happens.
