Ubuntu Hardy Heron

Ubuntu Hardy Heron I’m using Linux again for the first time in about nine months. The release of Ubuntu Hardy Heron caught my attention and I decided to give it a go.

I recently revisited Puppy and Sidux without satisfaction. The main problem with Sidux was I just couldn’t get the fonts to look good.

Gnome seems to always be better with fonts than KDE out of the box, although I generally prefer KDE.

The solution this time: I installed Kubuntu (Ubuntu’s KDE derivative) but kept the Gnome desktop. That means I get to use my favorite KDE programs like Konqueror from a Gnome menu.

And Kubuntu includes KDE4.

This isn’t mean to be a technical review. Visit here for more detail.

This brief article is simply to state a user’s opinion that I’m really happy with Ubuntu 8.04. Everything works (including a Logitech web camera) and it looks good.

Interesting postscript: I last tried Ubuntu in 2005, according to my registration details on the Ubuntu forum, where I forgot I had registered.

I just stumbled across an Ubuntu install disk I forgot I had … naturally, now that I need to find it to see what release it is, I can’t find it.

I play around with Linux desktop once in a while, though it’s been a year at least since I’ve had the time. We had an engineer here that used it as his primary OS for a couple of years (SUSE) without too many interoperability problems.
