I had a French pen pal named Eric R. who lived in Guadeloupe. I also had an English pen pal ... a young girl whose name I don't remember. I'll bet I've got her letters and Eric's in the ex's crawlspace.

There was some sort of service that signed up pen pals from faraway lands when I was in 9th and 10th grade which is how we all "met."

I made a call to Australia about 20 years ago. I'm pretty sure I was trying to call New England (which means I made an incredible dialing error) and a woman answered. I had the feeling she was in a bar or restaurant. The accent sounded odd for New England, but not terribly out of place, and there was a lot of noise. "Jeff" or whomever I asked for wasn't there and I realized I had a wrong number. The next month my phone bill showed the one-minute call at about $8.50.

I can call just about anywhere in the world now, Skype to phone, for $9.95 monthly.

I, personally, know that Vegemite isn't as much of a staple as Americans think, but I did enjoy me some bitter spread when I was over there. Mmmmmm.

I also had a penfriend (we call them penpals) from France when I was a child. She didn't write English well and I couldn't write a lick of French. It didn't last long.
