The cemetery at dusk on a rainy night
I went for a walk along Lake Terrace this evening while Michael had soccer practice at Grant High School.
It started raining as I reached the cemetery. With no immediate public shelter available, I ducked inside the cemetery gates after seeing a couple of buildings.
It was twilight on a murky evening; hauntingly beautiful in a dark way.
The first building I saw was Sexton’s Cottage. As the light dimmed, I just made out the sign which explained its origin.
The cemetery itself opened in August 1868. The cottage was built in 1904 for £250 according to a special design using red dolomite and limestone in a Gothic style.
But there is no verandah and the cottage offered little shelter as the rain increased.
It was getting darker and the wind picked up, howling through the cedar trees.
I snapped some photos with my mobile phone, then the battery died. No pun intended.
The other building I saw happened to be a public toilet.
I was outside a toilet in a cemetery at dusk with rain falling, no mobile phone and nobody knew where I was. Or did they?
Just when I thought it couldn’t get any spookier … I heard a strange groaning sound. When I turned around a headstone toppled over, and …
Well, everything was true until that last sentence. I just added it for dramatic effect.
The rain turned to drizzle and I ambled damply back to the school.
