Wearing a tie in the outback

Michael at Alice Springs in 1988The picture shows me at Alice Springs in 1988, aged 20 or 21.

I wrote a story about how few people wore ties to work compared with the southern states, and I became the photo model.

The story was well-received, as I recall.

I only spent a few months in Alice Springs.

I liked the place, but missed people in Victoria including my family, friends and a girlfriend.

It was a fascinating news beat though.

I recall interviewing the then Archbishop of Canterbury and being first journalist on the scene after the Tenant Creek earthquake.

So many important people travel there … it creates great opportunities for journalists.

Do kids still wear shorts that are that short in Australia? My boys won’t wear shorts that come much above the knee — I wonder if that’s caught on with the youth over there?

I wish I could find a pair I used to jog in so they’d know what “short” really was.

(A friend of mine refers to the shorts in the picture as Magnum PI shorts. My kids call them short shorts.)

I think they were football shorts I wore in that photo. Footy shorts are still short, but not as much as they were 15 years ago when Warwick Capper (pictured below ) made them famous.

Kids in Australia wear knee-length board shorts as well. I can’t understand it. Shorts should be short.

    Hi Michael

I remember that shot and the story that went with it.
