Snow on the Strzelecki Ranges

Snow on the Grand Ridge Road

The Strzelecki Ranges rise between the Latrobe Valley and Bass Strait in Victoria. They climb to about 740 metres at their highest point, Mount Tassie, but are basically just rolling hills in the west.

They are home to rare temperate rainforests in the higher parts between Traralgon and Yarram.

These hills were visible to me growing up in Traralgon, about 30km to the north.

When I was a boy in the 1970s, there used to be snow on these hills several times every winter. Sometimes the snow fell to the bottom of the ranges and lasted for several days.

There might be a light dusting once every winter on the higher parts these days.

I scanned this picture from my album. I think it was taken in 1986. It wasn’t a heavy fall of snow, because I was able to drive to the top of the ridge, but it stayed on the ground for most of the day.
