Books and dreams

Often when I’m absorbed in a book it influences my dreams.

That can be a little disconcerting when I’m reading a graphic novel.

Currently I’m half way through the 975 pages of Jonathan Littell’s The Kindly Ones, translated from the original French and released in English last month.

The book caught my interest while browsing a store in Melbourne.

I thought it would be a good holiday read while I have the time to concentrate and read such a long story.

It’s the fictional memoirs of a German SS officer who served in the Ukraine, Russia and on special duties to Heinrich Himmler.

The book is a matter-of-fact account of Nazi government and society.

Issues like the extermination of Jews are described in technical terms without emotion.

It’s thought provoking and disturbing.

As to my dreams, I don’t record them like perhaps I should.

Littell has transported my subconscious to a place I never expected to visit.

  1. Ebony Jackson says:

I have amazing dreams after reading about human suffering.
I go to places inhabited by torturers, rapists, murderers, low lifes, and creeps.

My dreams are in vivid colour and deafening noise levels.
Always, I am glad to wake only to learn that I am never asleep.

    Nightmares? who needs them.
