Walk to work

I walked to and from work today. It’s about 35 minutes each way; I should do it more often, but sometimes need my car during the day.

The quickest way to the office is down Wireless Road, then down Penola Road to Percy Street or Commercial Street.

These are all major roads, with lots of trucks on Penola Road especially. I prefer a quiet walk, especially in the morning, so I weaved through side streets in roughly a diagonal direction.

It was fairly cool this morning, but fine and mild this afternoon.

The streetscape changes significantly over the 3km distance.

Our area has lots of similar-looking homes, all in a row like Pete Seeger’s little boxes. Many were built as public housing and some still are.

Closer to town there are some older, beautiful stone homes, Edwardian and Federation style, many on larger blocks that may once have been market gardens.

The CBD is an odd bag of heritage buildings and soulless post-WW2 boxes, like The Border Watch office, which was once a supermarket.

It takes me an hour to walk from Bertha Street to Mark Street,(one way) and a bit longer to thaw out in mid winter.

Does that mean you have longer legs? Michael.

It would take me a long time to walk to my work, and that is along a highway, at that. No, thank you. But I do walk down off my hill into town every so often and manage to take in the surroundings.

Your town sounds quite interesting! Warren changes like that too. In the historic district we have the older buildings from the beginnings of Warren, but don’t ask me what style they are. Big and fancy, and, sadly, many of them converted to duplex or apartment buildings.

I biked to work for the first time today — it’s Bike to Work Week (and Friday is Bike to Work Day) and I used it as an excuse to finally get my butt in gear.

I came the most direct route. It’s 1.8 miles, or right at 3km.
