Getting bbPress to work

I’ve spent a lot of time over the past few days installing a new forum at The Border Watch website.

It’s my first experience of using bbPress in a production environment.

bbPress is connected with WordPress, which is the program I use here and for most of my sites.

A key feature is the ability to integrate with the WordPress database.

That’s what made me most nervous, because mucking around with a database always scares me. The prospect of making a mistake and blowing up the newspaper website was rather intimidating.

I backed up the database first, of course.

One problem was that I didn’t originally use a prefix for the WordPress database tables, so I had to create one.

I messed up the integration the first time because I failed to map the user roles and lost my admin login for the forum, called keymaster in bbPress.

It worked sweetly second time round.

Although the newspaper website doesn’t have many users, I like the idea of being able to control everything with a single login.

I also like being able to show the newspaper site’s latest articles in the forum sidebar.

bbPress is missing a few features, like moderation control and role creation, but I’m tipping they’ll be available as plugins with future releases.

The structure and coding is very similar to WordPress and I’ve had no trouble with the design side of things now the database issues are sorted.

It’s amazing how much time things like this can absorb.

This obviously was posted a month ago but anyways I found that bbPress today is much easier to use especially with the new 1.0.2 release.

I had missed the upgrade to 1.02, so thanks for mentioning that.
