I have a cash bonus incentive scheme for the older kids to achieve A grades at school and goals at sport.
Each time Michael or Kathleen achieves an A in their mid-year or end-of-year report they receive $5.
Each time they score a goal at soccer or hockey they receive $5.
The scheme has proved such an effective motivator I’m in danger of going broke.
In their mid-year reports, Kathleen achieved four As and Michael two.
Michael has scored six goals at soccer so far this year and Kathleen scored her first hockey goal today.
Ouch!
Blackmail is an art.
Looks like the kids have it nailed.
Come in…loser!

This reminds me — several years ago a buddy of mine told his son he’d match his pay as a hockey ref. At the time his son was making $4.00 a game. The league hired a new director who thought refs should be paid better — attrition was taking it’s toll — and boosted the pay to $12.00 a game.
My buddy explained it didn’t hurt as much as it could have. His son was saving for something the dad was going to buy for him anyway (the son was just supposed to pay toward it what he could).
Congrats to Kathleen and Michael — for the grades and goals.
So getting a goal is worth the same as getting an A???
Simple economics would suggest they should give up their schooling and play more sport.

Thanks for the parenting advice Don.
Kathleen is a straight A student who rarely scores goals (once ever). Michael is a talented soccer player who doesn’t get many A grades.
I think we have the balance right.
