The first sign of a premature end to winter was the sneezing. My allergies flared up earlier than usual this year.
Confirmation came this weekend with the balmy weather.
The maximum temperature on Saturday was 22 degrees! That’s extraordinary for this time of the year. A similar day in January would be considered pleasant.
Apparently the record high August temperature in Mount Gambier is 27, but I’m guessing that occurred near the end of the month.
It was still 20 degrees at 3.20am, which is the maximum temperature for Sunday.
The cool change came in afterwards. The minimum temperature for Sunday was 8.4 degrees at 1.54pm. I think that’s a new record-high minimum for August.
It’s very unusual to have the maximum overnight and the minimum during the day.
Michael was playing soccer at 1.54pm and I can affirm it was freezing. The rain and hail was falling horizontal and the wind gusts blew my umbrella inside out.
I thought they should have called off the game, but the boys were already wet and cold, so it probably made no difference them playing on.
I told Michael to keep running around, even when he wasn’t in the play.
He scored two goals in his team’s 6-0 win.

Man, I wish I had 22C in the winter here! It has a tendency to get well below 0C around these parts. That’s the trouble of a temperate zone.

That’s the thing about spring. I’ve always reckoned the winter in southern Australia only goes for about eight weeks from mid June to early August.
Outside that period you can get a real mixed bag on any give day.
Our seasons are different to the official calendar. Summer doesn’t really start until late December and goes to the middle of March.
Whatever season we are in, I am over it!
