Newspapers record history

The Argus

This is a pictorial page from the defunct Argus newspaper in Melbourne, dated Tuesday, January 17, 1939 after the black Friday bushfire.

The child in the bottom left corner is my father, aged 3, receiving a new pair of boots from the Warragul relief depot after his family’s house at Icy Creek burnt down.

The picture in the top right corner shows Saxtons Mill at Tanjil Bren where my uncle Michael Gorey died and my uncle Jim Gorey survived in another dugout.

These records are courtesy the wonderful Australian Newspapers project from the National Library.
