I love this story in The Age about fast-food giant McDonald’s tackling a Queensland rugby club over its use of the name McBrat as a logo. Here’s an extract:
“A rugby union club has accused McDonald’s of bullying after the fast food giant objected to its use of the name McBrat as a logo.
“The Brisbane Irish rugby club has the name McBrat on its players’ shorts after the team’s major sponsor, lawyer and former player Malcolm McBratney.
“McDonald’s is opposed to Mr McBratney registering McBrat as a trademark with the Australian Trademarks Office.
“Mr McBratney, partner in the Brisbane law firm McCullough Robertson, specialises in intellectual property law and is prepared to fight McDonald’s over the trademark issue.
“He said McDonald’s had a history of challenging anyone who tried to register a trademark that contained ‘Mc’.”
It sounds like McDonald’s might have bitten off more than they can chew.
