Health insurance switch

We’ve switched our private health insurance from Medibank Private to GEHF (Government Employees Health Fund). The cost for basic hospital and select ancillary is about $150 per month compared with $250 per month previously.

The benefits are less though. We can’t really afford anything, but I worry that we can’t afford not to have something. We’ll see how this goes for the next year or so, and whether prices rise again, before making a final decision.

Medibank annoyed us with misleading responses to telephone enquiries, shifting the goalposts on excess payments, and raising premiums every year.

The new fund enables us to claim online for ancillary services and they sent reply-paid envelopes for other claims. A small gesture maybe, but significant when you’re isolated from branch offices like we are.
