Call centre workers

April 15th, 2005 | No Comments

Has anyone else noticed how nearly all the call centre salespeople who bother you at home with "special offers" have foreign accents? Frequently they’re English, Irish or European.

Today I was called by someone from Westpac trying to flog life insurance and she was definitely English.

I can only presume that most of them are backpackers earning a few dollars to pay for the holiday. When you phone a technical call centre the people often have an Indian accent, but that’s probably because they’re in India!

I thought I read somewhere a while ago that a new law was supposed to ban these unsolicited phone calls. That’s probably why they send you a letter first now, which invariably goes straight into the round filing cabinet, and they use the letter as an excuse to call. Must be some sort of a loophole, or the law doesn’t exist, or possibly isn’t enforced.
