He’s sorry

In the paper today we had a full-page color ad from some bloke saying sorry to his wife, girlfriend or significant sheila (but almost certainly not his mother).
I have to confess that I missed the ad until tonight when I was reading at a more leisurely pace. The ad says:
Sorry Princess. I’m sorry for all [...]

Newspaper mistakes

“Rotary supports bowel cancer” proclaimed the headline in the Golden Mail.
They were writing about the Bowelscan program, which aims to detect and prevent bowel cancer.
In the Kalgoorlie Miner this week we dropped a clanger by describing a vehicle which caught fire as a Holden when in fact it was a Falcon. That’s like calling a [...]

Kalgoorlie Miner award winners

I’m really proud that two Kalgoorlie Miner photographers were recognised tonight at the Western Australian Press Photographer of the Year Awards 2008.
Mary Mills won the picture story category for her series on the Kalgoorlie Cup. Mary came second in the section for best country photographer and fellow Miner shutterbug Jodi Kingston came third.
Photographs are an [...]

Record low temperatures

I don’t like the heat and I welcome unexpected cool weather when it comes in Kalgoorlie during summer. Unfortunately I missed most of the current cool change until today.
Kalgoorlie has received the tail end of a tropical cyclone which became a rain depression across inland parts of Western Australia. That’s not unusual, but the low [...]

Subway price variation

Strolling through Melbourne today, I called in at Subway in Elizabeth Street for lunch on the go.
I ordered my usual six-inch tuna sub and nearly fell over when I saw the price was just $3.95.
In Kalgoorlie the cost is $5.45. Why the 28 percent difference?
Looking at possible variables, volume is probably higher in Melbourne (but [...]

Vote for Kalgoorlie

The makers of Monopoly are taking votes online for cities to appear on a new world edition of the popular board game.
Last year I wrote how the Kalgoorlie community galvanised enough support to win a place on the Australian version. There is now a push for the Goldfields capital to go global.
The only chance is [...]

Super Pit in the headlines

Australia’s biggest gold mine, the Super Pit, made front page news in The Australian today. This follows a report in the Kalgoorlie Miner earlier this week that the south-western wall collapsed.
The operator, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines, is a joint venture between North American giants Newmont (USA) and Barrick (Canada).
Here is Kalgoorlie we hope the mine [...]

Great Eastern Highway

The Independent Member for Murchison-Eyre, John Bowler, has a gift for saying what people are thinking. That’s what makes him a successful politician.
In the Kalgoorlie Miner on Monday he described the State Government’s decision to keep the highway closed between Kalgoorlie and Perth as “backside covering”.
He was referring to officials in the Department of Environment [...]

Bushfire inquiry

I feel quite strongly now there should be a Royal Commission or a judicial inquiry into the WA bushfire deaths.
A 19-year-old girl is the latest casualty, killed in a motoring accident on the alternative gravel route. Four lives have now been lost because of a poor decision and a failed system.
Police are currently investigating on [...]

WA Goldfields bushfire

I started driving to work at 7.30 this morning thinking it would be an easy day. My biggest problem was wondering how to fill tomorrow’s paper given the scarcity of news.
A call to my mobile shook that theory. I was told that three people were killed overnight in a tragic fire on the Great Eastern [...]
