Centrals under 12

This is the Centrals Under 12 soccer team. Michael is in the back row, second boy from the left.

His team needs to beat Portland this weekend to have any chance of playing in the finals. Portland is one place above Centrals on the table and this game is the longest road trip, about one and a quarter hours.

Hockey transformed

August 1, 2008 · Filed Under Kids, Sport · 2 Comments

I started playing hockey at school when I was 15. Now 26 years later I’m watching my 14-year-old daughter have her first experience of the sport.

There is a chasm of difference between our experiences.

Hockey was a novelty for teenagers when I first had a casual hit during a sport session at school (described here). Read more

BlogUpp link exchange

May 17, 2008 · Filed Under Kids, Technology · 3 Comments

I committed space on my sidebar yesterday to BlogUpp after reading a positive review.

It claims to be “the easiest recipe ever for a more effective and interactive web promotion.”

BlogUpp uses an iframe in the sidebar. The theory is that users promote two other blogs/sites in exchange for 90 percent cross-promotion back to their site, which is supposedly the best ratio on the web. Read more

Maggie’s voice

I tried to get Jim to talk into the recorder today, but he wouldn’t. So here is Maggie again:

Highland dancing

Highland dancing

Maggie has graduated from Tiny Tots at the Kalgoorlie Dance Academy and next year will do tap dancing. After that she has a choice.

I was keen for her to do Highland dancing, which the academy has a great reputation for, but the cost is high. Someone told me it could be $1000 to get the required apparel.

Ballet or Irish dancing might be the go unless my Scottish roots and preference prevail.

Maggie’s voice ‘on the record’

December 6, 2007 · Filed Under Kids · 2 Comments

Anyone with small children will know how they like to repeat bland jokes. Margaret was doing that tonight, so I decided to get her on the record.

I used my mobile phone to record her voice in OneNote and synced it to my PC in wav format. It was 1.1MB for this small exchange. I then used Zamzar free file conversion to make an MP3 version at 211kb, which you can now hear:

School awards

December 5, 2007 · Filed Under Kids · Comment

Hannans Primary School held its end-of-year concert and awards presentation tonight. Young Michael received the excellence award for his Year 6 class. That’s basically the academic prize.

John Paul College is having its awards ceremony on Friday night, which unfortunately I’ll miss because I’ll be in Melbourne visiting Dad.

He’s in hospital tonight with fluid on the heart. Hopefully the doctors can treat that easily enough and he’ll be okay when I get to see him on Saturday.

Kathleen has won an award too. The school wrote to tell us that, requesting her attendance. We don’t know what it is yet. Last year at Hannans Primary she won the Year 7 maths prize.

Dancing queen

Margaret has her first dancing concert next Saturday.

She has been attending dance lessons for most of this year and the concert will be the grand finale.

I went along to watch the girls practice several weeks ago and it’s quite a sight.

I’ve got no idea how the instructor manages to maintain the attention of 20 three-year-old girls, but she does a great job with them.

It’s very much organised chaos in a cute way.

There will be lots of proud mums and dads there next week with eyes only for their little princess.
The photos show how Maggie has to do her hair for the concert.

I wrote this post in Windows Live Writer, inserting a table with two columns, which I would have struggled doing in the WordPress dashboard.

Personalised Christmas cards

October 14, 2007 · Filed Under Kids · 2 Comments

Gorey childrenI've just ordered some personalised Christmas cards from Vista Print . I've used this company before for Christmas cards, business cards and labels. I think they're based in Hong Kong.

It's also the first time in over a year that I've taken a photo of all the kids together, which is something I should do more often. The full-size image is here and the gallery is here.

Soccer captain

October 1, 2007 · Filed Under Kids · Comment

Young Michael is away in Perth this week to play Country Week soccer. The Goldfields under 12 team plays eight games in four days, then a final on Friday before getting home close to midnight.

I just spoke to Michael and heard that he was named captain of the team. Today they drew one game and lost one.

I was hoping to go along as team manager, but couldn’t get the week off work.
