Dash for cash in stiletto sprint

September 2, 2008 · Filed Under Sport · 2 Comments

Stiletto sprintA world-record field of 265 women risked life and ankle in Sydney today to contest the Stiletto Sprint.

Blonde 400-metre hurdler Brittney McGlone, 18, was first to cover the 80-metre distance and collected $5000.

A few girls suffered scratches apparently, and not just from other competitors.

I fall over just thinking about trying to walk in high heels, let alone sprinting any distance. I guess it’s an acquired skill and one I’m destined never to learn.

An Australian male equivalent might be to run 400 metres in gumboots while carrying a slab of beer.

Lethal bows out gracefully

Leigh Matthews has cleverly retired from the Lions coaching job with one year remaining on his contract.

He knew his time was up and wanted to get out a year early, rather than a year late. John Howard should have been that smart.

Lethal is a great coach and deserved to select the time of his departure.

It’s great that captain Jonathan Brown re-signed for another four years. The Lions have a solid base of talented players to build from next year and should play finals if they can discover some consistency.

Scoreless quarter among Fitzroy firsts

Fitzroy and Collingwood played the only scoreless quarter in VFL history: the fourth in Round 13, 1901.

In other Fitzroy firsts:

In Round 7, 1903, Bill McSpeerin became the first of 110 players to play 100 games for Fitzroy. Read more

Symonds needs to go

August 30, 2008 · Filed Under Sport · Comment

Andrew Symonds was involved in a selection incident involving Bangladesh for the second time today when he missed playing for Australia in Darwin.

Symonds was late for a team meeting because he had been fishing. He was sent home and dropped from the series.

Bangladesh are easybeats and Australia won comfortably, but what about Symonds? Read more

Rethink needed in country football

August 29, 2008 · Filed Under Sport · Comment

Aaron’s comment and a discussion I had today made me think about the state of country football.

You read and hear about the success stories and sometimes about the total failures, but you don’t often learn about the clubs that are struggling. And there are many of them.

I’m now in Mount Gambier, which has four clubs in the Western Border Football League. Struggling clubs Millicent and Heywood are not that far away. The other league clubs are from Portland and Hamilton. Read more

Australian Olympic trivia

August 26, 2008 · Filed Under Sport · 2 Comments

I read or heard once that Australia, Great Britain and Greece are the only countries that have competed at every modern Olympics.

A couple of websites claim Switzerland has achieved the same feat.

Wikipedia sheds some light on that: “Switzerland boycotted the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, but the equestrian events for those Games were held in Stockholm, Sweden earlier that year, where the Swiss dressage team won a bronze medal.”

Strictly speaking, it’s not true that Australia has been to every Games. In 1896 the Colony of Victoria was represented by Edwin Flack, who was living in London at the time. Read more

The Olympics

Why is beach volleyball an Olympic sport? How many people in the world play it competitively?

Likewise synchronised swimming.

Softball has been dismissed as an Olympic sport and rugby can’t get in, yet these Mickey Mouse sports continue at the games.

Let’s make blogging an Olympic sport. More people do it than beach volleyball.

Budgie protest

I’ve never been a fan of the “budgie smuggler”. I won’t enter discussion about whether that’s because I have a big gut or a small appendage; that’s for others to judge, and a small number regarding the latter. Read more

National league soccer in Mount Gambier

August 2, 2008 · Filed Under Sport · Comment

A League soccer came to Mount Gambier this afternoon when Perth Glory played Adelaide United in a pre-season cup game.

The crowd was about 4000, slightly lower than expectations, perhaps due to showery weather in the early afternoon.

The game finished in a scoreless draw, which was disappointing for the fans. I think my son Michael was the only person in the crowd wearing a Perth Glory shirt. Read more
