Tiger and butterfly
The twins had their faces painted today. Jim was unusually extroverted and wanted to be first. He asked to be a tiger. Maggie followed and wanted to be a butterfly.
We went to hear one of my work colleagues who plays acoustic guitar in a duo. They performed this afternoon at a local hotel.
It was great, but we had to leave early to take Michael’s friend to the airport.
The boy flew across from Kalgoorlie last weekend and stayed with us for the second week of the school holidays.
Birthday video
Here’s a brief video of Maggie opening one of her birthday presents:

Jim sings Puff the Magic Dragon
I’m thinking a lot about the twins tonight because it’s their fourth birthday tomorrow. Jim likes singing. His favorite songs at the moment are Jingle Bells and Puff the Magic Dragon. Here he is singing Puff:

The twins are four!

James and Margaret will be four years old in a few hours. On one hand it seems like yesterday they were born. On the other hand it seems like they’ve been part of our lives forever.
They have unique personalities and they’re much more outgoing than Kathleen and Michael were at the same age.
Jim is a computer wizard and as the previous post describes, Maggie is handy with a digital camera. I think they’re both advanced for their age, especially Jim.
Margaret: Self portrait

Maggie took this photo of herself. I thought there was something wrong when I took four pictures tonight, went to download them and found 47 items on the memory card.
Maggie and Jim agreed it was the female twin responsible for the other 43. There were pictures of the roof, wall, pillows, Jim at the computer and this artistic self portrait. Not bad for nearly four years old.
Busy day, busy week ahead
Today was the St Barbara’s Festival Parade in Kalgoorlie. I wrote about it last year, but in brief it’s the city’s community festival in honor of the mining industry.
We were fortunate to have 28-degree weather after some forties during the week. I took Michael, Jim and one of Michael’s friends to the parade. They had a lot of fun watching the floats and collecting lollies.
The girls stayed home to prepare for Maggie’s first dancing concert, which began at 7pm.
After the parade finished I rushed Michael’s friend home and navigated the blocked streets to reach the Goldfields Arts Centre just in time. This is a great venue. I know the manager through Rotary and she does a fantastic job under difficult circumstances. Read more
Children’s height
I just measured Jim and Maggie for the first time in months. They will both have their fourth birthday on December 16.
According to this reference, boys and girls should be about the same height at four years old. The median height for both sexes at four is 102cm (about 40 inches).
James is 102cm and Maggie 97cm (two inches difference).
Twins are a handful
Jim and Maggie will be four years old in December. They are a real handful compared with our older children at the same age. I think they feed off each other in terms of mischief and try to emulate the older kids in achievement.
Maggie made scrambled eggs today. I dozed off and Michael was outside playing his Sony. Juliet and Kathleen came home from shopping and found the hotplates on.
Maggie had broken the eggs and added various ingredients. She put in too much milk, otherwise the eggs would have been perfect.
Dorothy the Dinosaur
|
I took the twins to see Dorothy the Dinosaur’s Dance Party today at the Kalgoorlie Town Hall. They didn’t actually get into it as much as I’d expected. The organisers wisely limit the show to about one hour, which is about the attention limit for the target audience of three-year-olds and parents. I tried taking some photos of the theatrical extravaganza, but the flash didn’t kick in as far as the stage. Perhaps I should have asked Jim for some tips. When I went to download the pictures I discovered there were 98 of them on the memory disk, of which I could only account for a dozen. I caught Jim (3) playing with the camera last week. It seems he actually figured out how to take photos, including this nice one of Maggie to the right, complete with incriminating evidence that Maggie was playing with my mobile phone! |

Mischief
This is a recent evening photo of the twins. Although Margaret is smaller than James, she is definitely the ringleader in mischief.
Out of all our children no other one has been as inquisitive and mischievous as Margaret. She doesn’t stop exploring, questioning, climbing, collecting, gathering, sneaking.
Yesterday, I found that Maggie had taken some chocolate out of our room and was sharing it with her siblings. Maggie didn’t take it, “naughty Tora” did, whoever Tora is we don’t know.
We discovered tonight that she thinks she has a sister Mary who lives far away. Her imagination is extraordinarily vivid and she can draw well for her age of three years.
And yes, Dad has a soft spot for her! She has had a hair cut since the photo was taken too.
