Mailwasher for Linux
A big thumbs up to the people at Firetrust for releasing a Linux version of their excellent anti-spam software Mailwasher Pro.
It looks the same and works just as well as the Windows version, showing what software producers can achieve towards cross-system compatibility when they want to.
I was even able to use my Windows registration key on the Linux version. Considering it’s the same computer this is only reasonable, but I didn’t necessarily expect it.
I also like the fact that Firetrust enables registered users to easily recover their keys.
Needless to say, Mailwasher is a great program, which effectively blocks spam before it gets to your inbox.
Medicare for IVF
I don’t have a problem with the Federal Government’s plan to limit Medicare support for IVF to three times a year (and three in total for women aged over 42).
We’ve known couples who received IVF treatment and they pretty much paid for everything themselves. The Medicare rebate has only become available since the safety net was introduced last year.
As I understand it, a couple will pay for the first treatment themselves, which puts them over the safety net threshold, and they’re then entitled to significant Medicare rebates for subsequent cycles.
No doubt it must be a difficult, even traumatic experience. Four times a year would probably be sufficient for most people.
Free hosting service
If you’re an Alpine Shire resident you can now take advantage of my free hosting service at www.alpineshire.com.
There are some limitations, such as 1MB in size, and these are explained on the site. The URL should be quite attractive for local business and individuals, ie http://www.alpineshire.com/username.
There’s nothing in it for me except some advertising and the potential to upgrade clients in future to commercial products.
The free hosting includes some excellent templates and a browser-based site builder.
CT scan
I had a CT scan in Albury today, as requested by my doctor to rule out possible nasty explanations for my ongoing headache. The headache, by the way, began to subside this afternoon after seven days.
Having the scan was like I imagine it to be stepping aboard a spaceship. I was strapped onto a plastic bed and inserted into this high-tech machine head first. Beam me up Scotty (except I was laying down). Mufflers blocked out the sound. I saw nothing and heard little.
I was required to fast four hours beforehand. After I came out of the space machine the operator asked me to stay there while she showed the radiologist the pictures. Apparently, if you break the fast, it’s usual they inject some iodine and take another scan to obtain sufficient contrast in the final image.
After the scan I had an appointment with a doctor client in Wodonga. I told him that Juliet suggested I see a chiropractor if all else fails. He thinks they’re snake oil peddlers and strongly advised that I let them nowhere near my neck, but he thinks the back manipulation harmless.
It paused me to defer that option for now. I think it possible that poor posture at a new computer desk caused the problem, so I’ve now made adjustments and I’ll see how it goes.
Headache
I’ve had a constant headache for six days now. I keep thinking a good night’s sleep will take it away, but I managed that last night and still woke up with a headache.
I finally resolved to see the doctor, but he couldn’t shed any light on it, so tomorrow I’m having a scan done just to rule out anything nasty. The likely alternative is that I’ve got a low-grade virus that hasn’t caused any other symptoms.
Domain registrations
I’m now offering domain registrations as part of the Alpine Web business trading out of Alpine News.
I can buy the domains at wholesale rates from Primus Telecom and resell them at low margins, which are competitive with other retailers.
Sure, you can shop around and possibly get them cheaper, but if you want to consolidate your domains, hosting and support then it’s better to be with a one-stop shop.
Catching the mice
We caught three mice last night in less than an hour. Juliet bought some new traps yesterday in Wangaratta. They’re made of plastic, instead of wood and wire.
The mouse has to climb inside before he gets to tase the goodies. Before he knows what’s coming he gets snared in the jaws of death.
Saints stumble
I went to Wangaratta this afternoon to see Myrtleford play the Magpies. The weather was great and the crowd must have been at least 2000 .
Unfortunately the Saints were cold and received a thumping. Playmaker Brad Murray was out injured with a broken hand and I think he’ll be severely missed over the next few weeks.
Youth curfew
The Victorian Liberal Party has proposed that young people under 15 should face a midnight curfew or risk being detained by police. It’s an interesting idea.
It says something about parental responsibility, or lack of, that politicians are even thinking along these lines.
The Herald-Sun article this morning didn’t quote any opposition to the plan, which will no doubt follow. Read more
Order management system
I spent most of today configuring an order management system for my web site hosting service. Installation was a breeze, using Fantastico through my control panel.
There was a lot of work needed though to modify and configure the script. I’m using phpCOIN, a free software package that was designed for web hosts. It creates invoices and has a built-in helpdesk.
The tricky part was setting up payment options to match the hosting plans. I can accept Paypal, but I’m only processing credit cards offline at this stage.
