Supernumary tooth

November 30, 2005 · Filed Under Kids · Comment

Kathleen is likely to need braces. Her orthodontist diagnosed this over a year ago and he’s just waiting for the baby teeth to finish their run.

He also spotted an abnormality last year and referred her to an oral surgeon. It was thought she might have a cyst.

Xrays at the time were inconclusive, so the surgeon asked to see her again in 12 months. Read more

Vale Zimbabwe cricket

November 30, 2005 · Filed Under Sport · 2 Comments

It sounds like cricket is effectively dead in Zimbabwe. Following more than a year of upheaval it seems the final nails have been hammered into the coffin.

The resignation of Tatenda Taibu as captain was readily accepted by the corrupt men in charge. The remaining players are on strike until further notice.

The chairman is under investigation for currency fraud and other offences. That’s remarkable for the fact he’s under investigation. Normally they get away with it. Read more

Eating the national icon

November 27, 2005 · Filed Under Personal · 1 Comment

We like to eat kangaroo meat once a month or so. Safeway in Wangaratta sells kangaroo kebabs, burgers, fillets and sausages. They’re great on the barbie.

This week we tried a kangaroo roast for our Sunday meal. What strikes me about the meat is how sweet it tastes. It really is quite distinctive.

Writing this reminded me of an article in yesterday’s Age about British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, who apparently slaughtered a lamb on national television. His rationale was that you’re not a real cook unless you’ve experienced all parts of the food chain.

I don’t know about that. Kangaroo might taste nice, but I’m not about to take a knife to Skippy.

Hangman axed

November 27, 2005 · Filed Under Personal · 1 Comment

The Herald-Sun reported today that Singapore has sacked its hangman, Darshan Singh, because he gave a media interview and exposed his identity.

Darshan is a 74-year-old grandfather. He has been responsible for implementing every instance of capital punishment in Singapore since 1946.

The whole concept of being a hangman is totally surreal and I won’t make any comment.

This topic is newsworthy because a 25-year-old Australian will next week become the first prisoner in 50 years to be executed in Singapore without Darshan’s hand on the rope.

Apparently the Singapore Government will import someone from Malaysia for the task.

Election result

Sixty percent of the vote has been counted and I can’t win a seat on council. This is my official “concession”.

I’ve opened a beer and will fire up the barbie soon. Life goes back to normal.

I’m actually relieved that I didn’t win. That shows, I suppose, I’m not a very good politician!

Pass the baton

November 25, 2005 · Filed Under Personal · 3 Comments

Herald-Sun: November 25, 2005
My photo appeared on page five of Victoria’s highest-circulating daily newspaper yesterday, the Herald-Sun from Melbourne.

It was to do with my non-selection to run with the Queen’s Baton in the Commonwealth Games relay.

The article quoted me correctly, but missed my main point, which was that Porepunkah has been snubbed by the relay organisers. Read more

Hard labor

November 23, 2005 · Filed Under Personal · 3 Comments

I’m fairly fit, but today I used muscles that I didn’t know existed and I’ll definitely pull up sore tomorrow.

Our back yard looks like a First World War battlefield thanks to pipes being laid for connection to the new sewerage scheme. The plumbers left it a right mess.

We need to plant grass seed, and because the surface dirt is rocky and hard we had to buy two small truckloads of topsoil.

This was piled up at our back gate for me to shovel into a wheelbarrow and shift manually to the future lawn.

Sixty loads later I think there should be enough to spread before sowing tomorrow. There’s even a little topsoil left over in case I have enough energy remaining to cart it onto the garden for a vegie patch.

Spam Gourmet eats junk

November 22, 2005 · Filed Under Technology · Comment

I discovered an innovative anti-spam tool today while browsing SourceForge. It’s called Spamgourmet and at no cost it’s worth every second it takes to register. From the web site:

If you give your email address to everyone, you are bound to receive spam emails, and you won’t know where they came from. Wouldn’t it be convenient to give a different email address to every business or web site, while getting all your email as before? Wouldn’t it be easiest to assume the address will be given to spammers, and have it work as a spam blocker by shutting off automatically unless you decide otherwise?

Sleepy-time milestone

November 21, 2005 · Filed Under Twins · 1 Comment

Juliet fears losing her “baby” now that James is sleeping in a bed. He switched successfully from a cot to a single bed last night. He actually seemed rather pleased with himself.

The catalyst was Kathleen wanting to separate the bunk bed in her room to a single, with half being transferred to the nursery for James.

Meanwhile, Maggie still starts in a cot, wakes up after a few hours and snuggles up to Mum for the rest of the night.

The other toddler milestone is their increasing use of the potty, but that doesn’t seem such a reader-friendly topic to write about.

Following footsteps from the past

November 19, 2005 · Filed Under Personal · 1 Comment

We had a family trip to Shepparton today. After shopping we went swimming at the indoor pool and then stocked up on bulk foods at the fruit factory.

Afterwards we travelled about 40km out of our way to enjoy a barbecue at Goulburn Weir near Nagambie. Juliet and I had been there before with the twins and liked the peaceful outdoor setting.

Goulburn Weir is close to Angustown, where my great-grandparents raised their family from 1890 to 1910 before shifting to Shepparton. Read more
