First fun run

May 21, 2006 · Filed Under Personal · Comments Off

I ran a fun run today for the first time. The words “fun” and “run” are really contradictory, especially in an organised context, however I did enjoy the overall experience.

I ran 4km in the GMF Health event. The 10km event seemed a little intimidating given my current fitness and the warmth of the weather.

I still don’t know my time, but I feel that I pushed myself more than the speed for my 5km morning runs several times a week. I was tending to cramp after the event.

Mild weather continues

I stopped checking the weather forecast for a while and I didn’t miss anything because every day was 23 degrees.

The temperature is now starting to increase and the forecast for Tuesday is 27 degrees. These figures are incomprehensible in May for someone from cooler climes in Victoria. The last low-level snowfall we experienced at Porepunkah was in May!

The mozzies are still buzzing here. Apart from that the conditions are glorious.

A quick check of the Weather Bureau site shows that 30 degree days are possible in every month except June and July.

First hockey game

First hockey game
A day after his first soccer game Dude played his first hockey match. It’s an under 13 competition and at age 10 he’s one of the smallest boys. Soccer is his school year group.

Dude did pretty well at hockey and won his share of the ball.

Online photo gallery

I’ve set up an online picture gallery at Flickr. It saves my bandwith, the photos can be linked to anywhere and there’s virtually unlimited storage.

The service is affiliated with Yahoo and carries small advertisements. It’s very neat and sure beats uploading pictures to my own server.

First soccer game
Dude played his first soccer game today and scored a goal in his team’s 11-0 victory against the Coolgardie Bushbashers.

James and Margaret joined the team huddle at half time and helped themselves to oranges.

A morbid thought

I don’t think I’ve ever written it here before, but my middle name is John. My full name is the same as my grandfather and uncle. My uncle was sadly killed in Victoria’s Black Friday bushfire of 1939.

I searched for my name on Google tonight and a reference to the Tanjil Bren bushfire tragedy was one of the first hits I came across.

A little later I discovered a Queensland Warden’s Court finding into the death of Michael John Gorey in a mining accident at Mount Isa in 1991.

The latter Gorey is almost certainly related, suggesting the Michael John name might not be a happy combination!
