Blondie
Every teenage boy has a crush and mine was for Blondie. She just made me melt, especially when she sung in French with Denis and Sunday Girl.
What can I say? She still turns me on.

How we spent Christmas
I heard Kathleen, 12, and Dude, 10, snooping around the Christmas tree about 6am. Margaret, 3, started screaming at 6.30am. When I went to her room, twin Jim was wide awake. He said Dude had been teasing them. This was obviously a ploy to get the little ones awake so Mum and Dad would also wake up. It worked, of course.
We exchanged gifts at 6.40am. I say “exchange” but it was more a mad rush to tear and play. It was all over at 6.55am.
I had breakfast and then started delivering copies of the Kalgoorlie Miner to the three of nine outlets open on Christmas Day that weren’t open late on Christmas Eve when the papers arrived especially early on the last Qantas flight. Unfortunately only one of the three was open before 8am.
We went to 10am Mass at St Joseph’s in Boulder. I delivered one set of papers on the way and the last set on the way home, only to receive a complaint from the shopkeeper that they were late! Merry Christmas.
I went for a jog at 11.30am. The weather was beautifully mild for this time of year. At 12.30pm we went to visit Carol and Gonz, our Zimbabwean friends who recently attained Australian residency. We were joined by a couple of South African families for Christmas lunch.
It wasn’t the same as being with our own families, but certainly the next best thing, especially for the children. Happy Christmas!
Fitzroy’s last grand final
I must be the last person in the internet world to have used YouTube. I finally got around to it today and discovered to my pleasure a clip of Fitzroy’s last premiership, the 1989 reserves grand final:
Zoho office suite
Zoho is an online office suite with a range of features.
I’m currently testing the “virtual office” which is an online equivalent of Outlook.
I’m typing this in Zoho Writer, which has the ability to publish directly to a blog. Writer can also open Microsoft Word documents.
Documents can be saved online and shared with others for collaboration.
I actually think Zoho is ahead of Google in this field at the moment.
Christmas work poll
I think overtime is fair enough for Christmas Day.
Margaret’s new look
Maggie had her ears pierced today. She really wanted to do it and was very brave by all accounts.
When I came home this afternoon she ran to the door bobbing her head and pointing.
Both the twins had hair cuts today as well.
Feed aggregators
I've tried quite a few RSS feed aggregators – software versions and web sites – but I've never stuck with any of them for more than a few days.
That's partly because I switch between Linux and Windows, home and work too regularly to build content and maintain loyalty.
I have found one though, called Gregarius, that I might persist with for a while. It's a free PHP/SQL program that you upload to your own web site. It has an admin control panel where you can create categories and add feeds.
I've got an example running here.
Pandora internet radio
Truly a remarkable and fascinating site is Pandora Internet Radio. It's the face of the Music Genome Project which aims to select music for individuals according to their tastes.
Register with Pandora and you will be able to create "radio stations" that play songs you like.
I was cynical at first but it really does work. I started by selecting The Pogues and it came up instantly with one of their songs, followed by other similar artists.
That's where I thought it would fall down but for the most part it doesn't. You also have the option of skipping a song if you don't like it, albeit with a limit on the number you can skip.
I also tried a search for the Wiggles and it came up with one of their songs on the first attempt.
This intuitive selection makes it a potentially great tool for keeping the kids entertained or playing background music at a party. Registered users get a personal home page where they can bookmark their favorites.
Third birthday
The twins celebrated their third birthday today. It's hard to believe they are that old already.
Here's the entry I wrote the day after they were born.
Jim and Maggie aren't old enough to understand it's their birthday, but they know it's a special day because of the presents they received and the party we had with friends.
Jim received a fire truck, fireman's hat, fireman bear and a book about machines. Maggie received a Dora the Explorer doll, Dora bag and a book about cats, reflecting their respective interests at this stage.
