Reflection

I don’t tend to analyse my own life too much. Whatever will be, will be. I try to plan ahead, but mostly take things as they come.
On reflection though, the last six months have probably been the toughest I’ve experienced.
The news of Dad’s terminal cancer just under a year ago knocked me around. (more…)

Tributes to Peter Gorey

Dad’s funeral was held today in Traralgon. Although he had been a very private person for the past 10 years there was quite a big attendance.
Dad believed in God, but not in organised religion, so there was a civil celebrant. I thought it was a tasteful, moving service and others told me afterwards they thought [...]

Suburban football

There were some interesting articles in The Australian on Saturday about suburban football and the future of the rugby codes.
Regarding suburban football, the report described how it continues to some extent in Sydney rugby league, but no longer exists in Australian football.
There was mention of the Newtown Jets playing in a minor division. (more…)

Guest racing tipster

I’m the guest tipster for The Border Watch’s racing selections this week. It’s reported in the paper today that Gorey “has boldly declared he knows something about the horse racing game. Well let’s test him out!”
I’m no guru when it comes to equine pursuits, but I take an interest in the industry as opposed to [...]

Another webmail service goes

I logged into Gigya webmail tonight. I’ve always liked its clean, open layout and speed of operation. It also has lots of other sharing features and things I never used.
On logging in I was greeted with this announcement:
Note: the Gigya webmail service will be discontinued permanently on June 15th. We recommend that you forward any [...]

Peter Gorey: 1935-2008

Dad passed away last night about 11.40pm. It was a merciful end to a painful illness — one which had worsened greatly over the past fortnight.
I’ll be giving one of the eulogies at Dad’s funeral on Tuesday, and will compose my thoughts better over the next few days. (more…)

Parents should be licensed

The story that 18-month-old twins were found dead, apparently from neglect, in a Brisbane house defies belief. A 28-year-old man and his 30-year-old partner have been charged with failing to provide the necessities of life.
The charges could be upgraded to murder.
An earlier court hearing was told that police found the bodies in a “state of [...]

Upbeat typology

Thanks to Sue I took an online typology test to discover I’m an Upbeat.
I’d rather be upbeat than downbeat or deadbeat, not that they are official types. The others are Enterprisers, Social Conservatives, Pro-Government Conservatives, Disaffecteds, Liberals, Conservative Democrats, Disadvantaged Democrats and Bystanders.
It’s an American test, but substitute Labor and Liberal for Democrat and Republican [...]
