WordPress asides

I wanted to run some briefs in the sidebar on The Border Watch website. I was originally posting to Twitter and used a plugin to import the Twitter RSS feed.
I then decided to use Twitter differently and post headlines there, which meant I needed another solution for the sidebar briefs.
There are several WordPress plugins for [...]

RSS feed restored

I discovered today my RSS feed for this site was down, and it probably has been for a week. That’s because I was messing around with a personal hosted aggregator and foolishly used the feed directory.
It overrode the Feedburner URL and returned an error on the feed address.
I noticed the problem while signing up with [...]

Scoreless quarter among Fitzroy firsts

Fitzroy and Collingwood played the only scoreless quarter in VFL history: the fourth in Round 13, 1901.
In other Fitzroy firsts:
In Round 7, 1903, Bill McSpeerin became the first of 110 players to play 100 games for Fitzroy. (more…)

Symonds needs to go

Andrew Symonds was involved in a selection incident involving Bangladesh for the second time today when he missed playing for Australia in Darwin.
Symonds was late for a team meeting because he had been fishing. He was sent home and dropped from the series.
Bangladesh are easybeats and Australia won comfortably, but what about Symonds? (more…)

Rethink needed in country football

Aaron’s comment and a discussion I had today made me think about the state of country football.
You read and hear about the success stories and sometimes about the total failures, but you don’t often learn about the clubs that are struggling. And there are many of them.
I’m now in Mount Gambier, which has four clubs [...]

Penfriends

I was reading on Sue’s website how Americans think Vegemite is uniquely Australian. It’s not really and it’s not a must-have daily item for most Aussies either.
Anyhow, my brain turned full circle to the topic of penfriends.
Remember them? Young readers probably have no idea what I’m talking about. (more…)

Alexa page rank

Don’t expect to be particularly illuminated if a search result for Alexa page rank brought you here. I simply wanted to make an observation.
From the Alexa site: “Alexa’s traffic rankings are based on the usage patterns of Alexa Toolbar users and data collected from other, diverse sources over a rolling three-month period. A site’s ranking [...]

Australian Olympic trivia

I read or heard once that Australia, Great Britain and Greece are the only countries that have competed at every modern Olympics.
A couple of websites claim Switzerland has achieved the same feat.
Wikipedia sheds some light on that: “Switzerland boycotted the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, but the equestrian events for those Games were held in [...]

Usain Bolt stuns Matthew Hayden

Jamaican sprint champion Usain Bolt surprised international journalists when he said Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden was his sporting hero.
“I am a huge fan of Matty Hayden and he’s a cool customer out in the middle and I like his style,” Bolt said.
Most of the international media listening to Bolt’s interview didn’t know who Hayden was [...]

Walkers wed in Walkerville

This is a cute story from The Australian:
Where else would a pair of walkers get married but in Walkerville? Australia’s walking hero Jared Tallent desperately wanted the silver medal in yesterday’s 50km walk to go with his bronze from the 20km to make it a full set. He gets his “gold” when he marries fiancee [...]
