Kangaroos and goannas
According to this report a kangaroo inflicted extensive injuries on a man in Melbourne’s north-west.
The victim, aged in his 50s, suffered a large gash to the head and other wounds to the chest and hands.
Ambulance officers treated him at the scene. He was transferred to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.
“He was jogging near his home when he was attacked by a male kangaroo. He managed to fight the kangaroo off and made his way to a neighbour’s house who called 000,” an ambulance spokesman said.
Kangaroos are large animals and I wouldn’t like to tangle with one.
I can’t say I’ve every felt threatened by a kangaroo though. They normally hop away when they see a human. Read more
No answer to cow gas

The Australian Government is currently considering its response to a report into the impact of climate change which recommends emissions trading.
It’s a very complex discussion, but as I understand it companies and organisations that produce “bad gas” will be taxed while the production of “good gas” will be rewarded.
We managed to localise the debate for tomorrow’s Border Watch by obtaining comments from a local manufacturer, farmers, councils and timber workers. Read more
We have a puppy
We picked up a new puppy today, an eight-week-old black Maltese-Schitzu cross called Princess. She is pictured here with Maggie, aged 4.
Visit this post to see Maggie as a baby with Snowy, our former dog, also a Maltese-Schitzu cross.
We didn’t think Snowy would enjoy the heat in Kalgoorlie and weren’t sure how to transport him there, so gave him away to a loving home.
The way Princess is being doted on so far we expect the kids will have a lot of fun with her and the puppy will have fun too.
Me and horses

Me and horses just don’t get along. This picture shows me on a horse for about the first time. I was visiting friends at Gelantipy in 1986 and climbed aboard this rather docile creature.
It was a reasonably pleasant experience and it probably lulled me into a false sense of security and ambition.
A few months or so later I was an active member of Young Farmers and went riding successfully with a friend Joy on her steed called Raja.
I then came unstuck while riding with a (very short term) girlfriend. We built up to a canter. My mount suddenly decided to gallop and took off as though being whipped to finish a sprint at Royal Randwick. There was nothing I could do to slow the beast down.
Eventually, I steered him towards a fence and prayed it wouldn’t try to jump over. As he slowed down I took my cue and leapt overboard, fortunately with only minor physical harm and a very bruised ego.
A year or so later again I was visiting Perth. One of my cousins, who was then a jockey, took me to some stables. He asked me to hold onto a horse while he wandered off somewhere. I’ve never sneezed so much in my life. I was near total collapse when my cousin returned.
Ever since then I’ve been allergic to horses. A desensitisation program did little to help and I start sneezing if I get within 100 metres downwind of a horse.
