The must-have (apparently) keyword post

The Girl Who Wished She Was Australian did a keyword post. She has seen other people do it. I haven’t seen it before, but I lead a sheltered life.
These are the top 10 keywords driving people to my site, according to Google Analytics:

kalgoorlie miner
google finance
y7mail
cloudstreet
AFL drugs
michael gorey
yakedi
mathemagic
meet a mining man
the day we went to bangor

Comments now moderated

A visitor left a defamatory comment on this website overnight, which I didn’t notice until this morning. I’m sorry it took that wrong to remove it.
The remarks related to a former work colleague of mine.
I’ve been posting here since July 2003 without needing to hold comments for moderation, but that’s now changed, unfortunately.
I’m not lamenting [...]

Tumblr and Twitter

Regular readers will know that I like to experiment with different web services. Some I abandon as quickly as I try them.
There are probably dozens of my inactive accounts floating around various parts of the web.
Two that I get enthusiastic about occasionally, forget about, and then return to are Twitter and Tumblr.
The Tumblr account, using [...]

Chrome WordPress theme

I’ve switched this blog over to the Chrome theme by ericulous.
The picture shows how it looks in a Chrome browser. Having previously written about broccoli instead of Chrome, I now declare the Google browser is much faster than Firefox and IE.
I like the pastel colors of this theme.

Australian Newspapers

I’ve started a new blog called Australian Newspapers. It’s not as though I’ve got plenty of spare time to invest in this, so I’m currently questioning my sanity.
The aim is to discuss industry issues and trends. I’m not aware of any similar site so there should be some interest if the site gets discovered.
I won’t [...]

Transition period

Well folks, the packers come tomorrow and all our possessions will be boxed for removal by Tuesday night, including the computer I’m typing on now.
We’ll be living for three days without furniture before hitting the road on Saturday for our 2600km journey to Mount Gambier.
Eagle-eyed observers may have noticed that I’ve already updated my address [...]

WordPress 2.5

Like much of the WordPress community I’m waiting to hear some user feedback on the upcoming 2.5 version. So far I’m aware of changes to the admin section and the database, but not much else.
WordPress is free, of course, and any development work is highly appreciated.
I’m wondering though if I should upgrade immediately, as I [...]

Google pagerank zero

I noticed last week that my Google pagerank had dropped from four to zero. I assumed it was something to do with shifting my blog from the domain root to a directory.
That’s probably the case, because the Google webmaster guidelines state: “Don’t create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially duplicate content.”
I suppose while the [...]

Weakness in South America

The Google visitors map I published recently here shows that this blog has little following in South America or Russia.
Most readers are from Australia, with a healthy number in North America, some in Europe (but none in Iceland), a few in Africa and a handful in Asia.
I have had at least one reader from Brazil, [...]

New feed address

One negative impact of changing my blog address was the inconvenience to subscribers and the loss of some. The other main downside was that I messed with Google, which is probably a very naughty thing to do.
I also sacrificed $30 a month in advertising revenue to make the transition.
I can live with upsetting Google and [...]
