Shoppers resist rising dairy prices

I went to a dairyfarmers meeting in Mount Gambier today. It was like being home again, back in Gippsland when I was a reporter for “Stock and Land”.
There are 70 or so dairy farms in the South East of South Australia, so it’s not a dominant industry, but one that is certainly significant. (more…)

Pre-paid mobile phone rip-off

The Herald-Sun today reports that pre-paid mobile phone customers are spending up to $1 billion a year on phone calls they never make.
“Millions of mobile owners who pay upfront for their service allow call credits to expire,” the paper says.
Pre-paid phones make up more than half the national mobile phone market. (more…)

The mysteries of packaging

I sometimes wonder at the amount of packaging for certain products and how they are packaged.
Why do they stuff paper inside shoes, for example?
Why do plastic fruit juice containers have seals which need to be prised open with a crowbar?
Why do electronic gadgets come in plastic that’s harder to open than a medieval maiden’s chastity [...]
